In Beijing, we witnessed the building of incredible, totally unsustainable structures that were built to temporarily alleviate seemingly minor problems. For example, a giant silver scaffold erected for a few months to “hide” the demolition and reconstruction of the Qianmen area. In Berlin this morning, we saw the same technique interpreted on a smaller scale. The image above depicts the entryway to a local pre-school where workers had built a temporary driveway for construction vehicles to enter and leave. The “ramp” was made of heavy-duty hardened tar that served to dampen the sound the trucks would make when they went from sidewalk to street.
The ramp’s one-month life span was over, so the men demolished it. The demolition may in fact take another month.
