Chinese Ad Agency Spoof

I stumbled on this link from the Jung Von Matt blog that featured a “Chinese” advertising agency called Shen Advertising. They specialize in taking successful advertising campaigns and adapting them to your brand. Translation: they copy stuff and slap your logo on it. Sounded a little fishy, and upon closer inspection, I realized the whole [...]

Cleansing

I’ve been curious about the massive, graffiti-covered, Soviet-styled statue across the street since we arrived at our sublet on Greifswalder Strasse. Walking to the train this morning, I noticed that there was a crew out with pressure washers wiping away the layers of paint. Turns out that the statue is a DDR-era commemoration of Ernst [...]

Art Sucks…

Artinfo.com has added a nice new component in which the website will regularly feature significant video works from the past 35 or so years. The first offering is a compilation of early Martha Wilson performances: Routine Performance, Art Sucks, and Appearance as Value (all 1972); Method Art, Psychology of Camera Presence, Deformity, Cauterization, and Deformation [...]

Zhao Liang - In an Instant

For those in Beijing: Zhao Liang, whose work is featured in the Berlin Biennial, has an opening this weekend at the Three Shadows Photography Center in Caochangdi. I’ve seen a few of his films, which I would recommend for their insightful observation of everyday absurdities (Crime and Punishment in particular). Plus, Zhao Liang is an [...]

The Heartbeat of a Bird, online

Our friend Rob Wynne has just launched a website featuring some of his work from the past 10 years. Some of Rob’s thread drawings were included in our book By Hand, but his new poured and blown glass pieces are also stunning.

Tokyo TDC 2008

The Tokyo Type Directors Club has an exhibition of selections from its 2008 Annual up at the Ginza Graphic Gallery until April 26. A project I developed a few years back called Sleep Space is in the show.

Brunnen Strasse

Took my tattered umbrella for a walk down Brunnen Strasse today to have a look at a few of the galleries that have clustered just north of Rosenthaler Platz. After peering in through the locked door at Pitrowski Berlin’s exhibition of Stefan Hauberg, I turned next door to the Curators Without Borders space.

CWB has [...]

How to “Germany” Part Two

I stumbled upon another eyebrow-raising article about interacting with Germans and it gives similarly straightforward advice on how to relate. I’m starting to think none of these writers has lived in Berlin as a lot of this stuff doesn’t seem to apply in this relaxed and casual city. It’s still pretty funny to read.
In Dating [...]

ADC Festival Berlin 2008

Thought we’d try to get a sense of the German advertising landscape with a trip to the Art Directors Club exhibition in Berlin. The show, entitled Gipfel der Kreativität 08 (Creative Summit 08), featured work from designers and agencies from all over Germany as well as presentations from Karl Lagerfeld and Jonathan Meese. The exhibition [...]

Prämien Olympiade

I laughed out loud when I saw these “Chinese” characters promoting Olympics-related prizes for a German shopping rewards card. I especially like the elegant Chinese ladies in their traditional qipaos (this is how most people dress in Beijing). Usually on my days off you can find me in my coolie hat and red pajamas swinging [...]
