ADC Festival Berlin 2008

Thought we’d try to get a sense of the German advertising landscape with a trip to the Art Directors Club exhibition in Berlin. The show, entitled Gipfel der Kreativität 08 (Creative Summit 08), featured work from designers and agencies from all over Germany as well as presentations from Karl Lagerfeld and Jonathan Meese. The exhibition was incredibly comprehensive, with work from every possible medium.

This print campaign for a German nature conservatory was created by trees. A desk with drawing paper was placed beneath a tree branch that had pens affixed to it. When the wind blew, the tree made its own “drawing.” A lovely reminder that nature has a life and a creativity of its own.

I’d seen this piece by Yang Liu sent around as a powerpoint slideshow in Beijing previously, but never as a book. Using the most spare graphic symbolism, Ms. Liu details the differences between German people and Chinese people, often with hilarious results.

After seeing this giant stuffed “virus” for Youtube, I began to wonder why there weren’t more stuffed animals in advertising. This particular plush could be used as a bench for tired exhibition-goers. Multi-purpose.

One of the best things we discovered at the show was this set of cards called Legends of Rap. Ostensibly a set of trading cards, each one features a different musical pioneer from the early days of hip hop. From Run DMC to DJ Red Alert, each of the 32 cards features a lovingly hand-drawn illustration by Tobias Krafczyk on one side and an informative biography and discograhy by Claudia Basrawi on the other. You can buy it on their website for the hip hop lover in your life. I think we’re going to make a purchase to celebrate the dollar’s “surge” against the euro today!
