Quick trip to LA last weekend found us downtown and in need of breakfast. The Nickel Diner came through with some of the finest doughnuts I’ve tasted in, well, ever. The Samoa nods to its Girl Scout progenitor, and does a good job recreating the depth of texture that makes the cookie so nice. And the bacon maple doughnut with candied apple-smoked bacon — ridiculously good. All of the house-made pastries are the work of Sharlena Fong, whose credentials include time at Per Se.
Nice flickr set of material from the Herb Lubalin Archive at Cooper Union. The man was a master of contrasting hairlines with fat stems. Photos by Justin Thomas Kay.
Also, interesting to see this sketch Lubalin did for MTV:
Created for the elevator ride in the Standard Hotel in New York, Civilization depicts a journey from heaven to hell. Using stock and found footage, Marco Brambilla pieced together an epic and immersive dreamscape (which includes Michael Jackson dancing in the “heaven” area).
Two images of Jordan Wolfson’s Neverland. Michael Jackson’s eyes from his “Live from Neverland Ranch” broadcast have been isolated and placed on a background taken from a pixel sampled from his skin. Interestingly, the color of the background in the image on the artist’s site (bottom) is different from that on his gallery’s (top).
