The Chinese artist Liu Bolin continues his ongoing photo project of “blending into” the background. This time, he embeds himself in slightly more politically loaded situations, including a poster for the Olympic mascots and a scene where he’s being grabbed by a policeman.

Jon and Matt cooked up this brilliant, portable dog tent. The model in the photos is Louie (who we love). From the commonspace site:
This shelter is collapsable and comes rolled up in a bag. It is made with bio-degradable plastic kindly provided by Cereplast. The lining was hand screen printed on Loomstate organic cotton. Created in collaboration with Matt Penrose for the first annual Freemans Sporting Club - design / build - camping trip

Some strangely beautiful chairs by a couple of oddly obscure industrial designers. Or maybe I’m just painfully out of it?

Sergio Rodrigues, Sheriff lounge chair. Brazil, 1961. Rosewood and leather.

Martino Gamper, Chair ‘n’ Box. Italy, 2008. Appropriated shipping crate plywood and furniture elements.

Rong Rong started the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing, housed in a massive Ai Wei Wei designed complex. He often works with his wife, Inri, on photographic projects and the two of them have a new show up at Three Shadows. Titled “From Six Mile Village to Three Shadows,” the works will delicately detail the path the two have shared together as a creative duo in the last decade. We wish we could be there to see it in person.

It’s been out since February, but I hadn’t seen any photos of the new Ricoh R8 until recently. An updated version of our beloved GR Digital (purchased in Beijing two years ago), the updated model offers a large, high-resolution 2.7-inch LCD screen, 10 megapixels, and a 7.1x wide-angle zoom lens (among other improvements). Plus it still looks nice and unassuming.

Seems like a lot of people have been re-appropriating and re-imagining design from China lately. Designer Maarten Baas is the latest, with his collaboration with Pearl Lam’s Contrast Gallery in Shanghai. He created a series of hand-carved elm replicas of ordinary Chinese plastic chairs for his exhibition “The Shanghai Riddle.”

Maarten Baas, Plastic Chair in Wood, 2008. Carved elmwood with varnish. Edition of 50.

The Lange Nacht der Museen was last Saturday and over a hundred museums in Berlin were open until 2am. We checked out the Egyptian rooms at the Altes Museum, then headed to the Berliner Dom and the Deutsches Historisches Museen. Last stop was the Collier Schorr curated show at the Deutsche Guggenheim.

It’s hard to tell from the blurry photo, but this well-dressed businessman has the words “TRASH BOX” lettered neatly on his backpack. A protest against his job? His unfinished manuscript? Life in general? All of the above?
